About time-based changes in leakage current
Leakage current is a minor current that flows when DC voltage is applied.
The aluminum electrolyte capacitor standard for leakage current is set based on the value measured 1 to 5 minutes after applying rated voltage in an environment set to a temperature of 20°C.
From the “Graph of Time-based Changes in Leakage Current” due to the application of rated voltage shown in Fig. 1, we see that the leakage current value gets smaller and stabilizes over time. Leakage current is larger in higher temperatures, and smaller in lower temperatures.
As a reference example, Fig. 1 shows a radial lead-type capacitor at 105°C at 35V 2200µF.
The standard value is 770μA (value at 20°C, 2 minutes) but this is the value measured at a single point. Depending on the product, the continuous application of voltage could result in a value that is lower by double digits.
