Activated Carbon in Supercapacitors

The activated carbon in supercapacitors is deposited on aluminum foil and used as electrodes.
CHEMI-CON uses activated carbon with a large specific surface area of around 2,000 [m2/g] for the electrodes. The raw materials of the activated carbon include pitch, resin, and natural plant materials. After these are carbonized, a process known as activation is performed.
This process uses steam or alkaline bases to create holes in the carbonized materials, increasing their specific surface area. The shape of the holes, and specific surface area, differ depending on factors such as raw materials and activation method. This affects electrical properties (capacitance and resistance) as well as lifespan (reliability).
