TNR™ Ceramic Varistor Failure Mode

The failure mode for TNR™ Ceramic Varistors is generally short mode.
If a large surge current is applied, it may lead to an instantaneous short resulting in violent explosion and scattering that leaves the circuit open. Heat generated following the short may also melt and disconnect lead wires, or melt internal solder, leaving the circuit open. In addition, it is possible that an open condition could be caused by vibrations disconnecting the lead wires. Excluding factors due to physical or thermal stress, the failure mode is generally short mode.
