TNR™ Ceramic Varistor Deterioration

As ceramic varistors deteriorate, their leakage current increases. The degree of deterioration can be determined by measuring current leakage.
If the current leakage is 10 μA or more when a DC voltage of 1/2 the varistor voltage (V 1 mA) (470/2 = 235 V DC in the case of the 471K) is applied, it can be concluded that deterioration has begun. This will not immediately result in failure due to heat generation or thermal runaway, but the surge lifespan will be shorter compared to initial conditions, so we recommend replacement.
