Camera Module Depth of Field / F Value

The camera module depth of field describes the range over which the entire image is in focus. This is referred to as "shallow" or "deep". When only a portion of the image is in focus it has shallow depth of field. When the entire image is in focus it has deep depth of field.

And the F value gives the aperture of the lens. This also changes the amount of light collected, so has a large impact on image appearance (brightness and range of focus). The larger the F value, the less light can pass through the lens, restricting the amount of light collected.

Generally, a small F value results in a shallow depth of field, and a large F value results in a deep depth of field.
