Camera Module Exposure Time

The camera module exposure time is the time for which the sensor is exposed to light. It can be adjusted within a range of a few milliseconds to a few dozen milliseconds. This exposure is the brightness index of the image. It can be set to match the brightness of the scene—short for bright scenes and long for darker ones.

The Auto Exposure (AE) function automatically adjusts the exposure according to the ambient brightness and IC register settings.

When a lot of light is collected during the exposure, or the light levels are high, parts of the image that should be visible may appear white. This is called white clipping. Conversely, if very little light is collected during exposure, or the light levels are low, parts of the image that should be visible may appear black. This is called black clipping.
